Akshay Kumar’s ‘Rowdy Rathore’ celebrates the 80s with a hand painted movie poster
Bollywood movies over decades were accompanied by posters that spelled a distinct visual language of cinema. It was these hand paintings that represented the overall personality of Bollywood and allowed one to see our Bollywood icons in an artistic light. Today, as ‘Rowdy Rathore’ released a hand painted poster to announce the film’s release date (June 15, 2012), it clearly salutes the era of cinema that was aligned to art as much as it was to story-telling.

To delve further into this branch of art, we asked Rajesh Devraj, author of ‘The Art of Bollywood’- a book that traces the history of Bollywood posters, to talk on the subject. Devraj strongly believes that hand painted posters were more individualistic and represented the mood of the film. “The colour scheme chosen for the posters would be cleverly co-ordinated with the emotion conveyed and not just for poetic justice. So every angry young action hero would be painted in red, while every actress was splashed with pink and every gloomy scene would have oodles of blue.”

These manually crafted posters lasted till the mid-eighties and were usually painted by artists who would use stills from the movie for reference. While the art form died a couple of decades ago, Devraj believes that it encouraged the artists to create a distinct identity for the films and also gave Bollywood an identity of its own. “Hand-painted art work is more individualistic and artistic. The artist had the liberty to interpret the film in his own style. And today, when digital posters have replaced original hand-painted art work, each time we refer to something that is true to Bollywood, we go back to these posters.”

The confident brush strokes may be restricted to art galleries today but whether digital photographs do better justice to film ads in print is open to argument. To back these creative masterpieces, it can be firmly said that digital photographs have made our posters truly international but we have lost something that was truly our own.

Sunny won’t quit porn just yet

Sunny Leone may be all set to storm Bollywood with Jism 2 later this year but she makes it clear she isn’t in the mood to quit being a porn star just yet. “I haven’t  shot for any adult film after my Bigg Boss appearance but that doesn’t mean I am quitting the adult industry. I can never be sure enough to give it up. I cannot predict the future and one film in Bollywood does not guarantee I will get many other offers,” she says. “ Working in the adult film industry is not something I am ashamed of. I cannot deny that is where my roots are. It’s my job and I have been a dedicated professional. My company Sun- Lust Productions will continue to produce adult films and I will continue to remain associated with the industry,” she adds. Her first look in the much hyped Jism 2 was released by the film’s publicists this weekend and the film is slated to go on the floors on April 1. Contrary to the mood that the film’s PR machinery has generated, Sunny underplays any expectation that fans may have about the film being so scandalous as to send the censors in a tizzy. “It seems the whole world is looking for something outrageous in Jism 2 . I am not sure if the film can be termed as bold. As far as ‘bold’ is concerned, Jism 2 doesn’t have anything that the Indian audience have not already seen in Bollywood. The film will not cross any boundaries. There are no sudden surprises in terms of bold depictions. But then, the definition of bold differs from person to person,” she says.
“I play a character that is romantic as well as passionate. Jism 2 is sexy but everything is beautifully done. The story is about the journey of a woman whom the audience will love and hate at the same time,” she adds.
Ever since Mahesh Bhatt made Sunny a film offer on the sets of Bigg Boss last year, the audience has been shocked and amused. She seems to be in a hurry to change that perception.  “ Fans need not be scandalised just because the film casts an artist from the adult film industry as its heroine. I have shocked the audience sufficiently in the past,” Sunny says.

We can’t help him anymore but maybe there is someone else who can get the right treatment with our help. This money goes to patients in need which is why I have chosen the American Cancer Society.

They would have been elated to know I am working in a Hindi film. Back in Canada where I grew up, people of Indian origin are crazy about Hindi  films. The fact that I got a chance to work with the Bhatts will surely make them proud,” she says. For now, she is wholly dedicated to making the most of her Bollywood stint. “ My partner Daniel Weber is looking after my film production company while I shoot in Mumbai. There has been so much buzz about Jism 2 that it makes me anxious. Everyone is expecting something different and I keep thinking if I will be able to live up to all the expectation,” she adds.

Saifeena: Wedding next January?

According to a leading tabloid, Saif and Kareena are planning for a wedding late in January or early February next year.

February 10th has come and gone, and so has the release of Saif's thriller movie 'Agent Vinod' but we did not hear anything about their wedding so far. That is, till today.

Katrina in awe of Yash Chopra's sharpness

Actress Katrina Kaif, who is back in town from London after wrapping up a shooting schedule of Yash Chopra's directorial venture, says she is in awe of the veteran filmmaker's immensely sharp working style.

"You know Yash ji is very senior and everyone used to say how young he is at heart. But you have to look at how sharp he is," Katrina told reporters here.
"He used to pick up these very small things... like if something was disturbing me or I was not in a good mood, he used to just pick it up and know how to deal with it. So I think he is a very special person and we had an amazing time," she added.
Katrina was in London to work on Chopra's yet-to-be-titled love story opposite superstar Shah Rukh Khan.
This is her first project with King Khan, and this is also the first time she is being directed by Chopra, whose last venture behind the camera was "Veer Zaara" in 2004.
Katrina, 27, spoke on the sidelines of the launch of a book based on her film "Raajneeti", which presented her in a non-glamourous avatar and in a powerful role.
She didn't miss the chance to share sweet somethings about her "Raajneeti" director Prakash Jha too.
"One thing I can say about Prakash ji is that with all his knowledge and with all his intellect, he is an extremely intelligent person and extremely knowledgeable...
"... especially on the subjects that he directs... (they) are often very complex subjects, but never for once does he make you feel that you are slightly inferior in anyway to the knowledge of politics or his knowledge of literature," said Katrina.
Last seen in "Mere Brother Ki Dulhan", Katrina is also working with her former beau, actor Salman Khan in "Ek Tha Tiger".

A star studded opening for Vidhu Vinod Chopra Film Festival

The Vidhu Vinod Chopra retrospective film festival got off to a star studded start with several political and Bollywood celebrities in attendance.

The film festival is being held from March 29 to April 4 as a tribute to mark Chopra’s completion of 30 years in film industry.  Vidhu Vinod Chopra cinematic journey started with  short films like 'Murder At Monkey Hill' (which won him a National award) and 'Encounter with Faces'. His first feature film, shot in black-and-white was 'Sazaa-E-Maut' (1981). He is best known for films like 'Parinda', '1942: A Love Story', 'Mission Kashmir', 'Munna Bhai' series, 'Parineeta' and 'Three Idiots'.

According to Times of India, senior BJP leader L Advani said,   "Among Indian filmmakers, Vinod is one of the greatest one. He is one such filmmaker whose films I have seen. He is one such director whom I respect a lot. Recently, I liked '3 Idiots' the most,"

'I wish you were this large'

Two images spring to mind looking at the above photograph: SRK and the movie ‘Titanic’. And while anyone who stretches his arms isn’t SRK, this film has a lot in common with a sinking ship. The title and the promos may suggest a crummy mix of ‘Wall Street’ and ‘Blood Diamond’ but it’s largely a snore fest often interrupted by a jolting background score. So let’s make this review a little less painful and attempt a graphic novel approach.

Soul sisters?

This annoyingly chirpy couple lands up in Cape Town, SA where the husband has nailed a top job with the prestigious Trinity Diamonds. For those can’t tell the husband from the wife in the above picture, Kunal (Kunal Khemu) is the one on the right along with his wife Arzoo (Amrita Puri). The two are densely in love and spend quality time narrating fairy tales to each other (Arzoo actually takes us through the unedited version of Hansel and Gretel!).

If we can charter a flight, can’t we afford suits that fit us?

Now for the ignorant, selling diamonds brings in money and bartering arms for diamonds brings in blood money. That said, Kunal spends little time in getting red-handed and rakes home tuckloads of the second word in the title. Next, a song that markets Cape Town tourism, diamond retailing and the idea that money (bloody or not) can buy happiness, designer clothes and extras to dance along with you and make you look comparatively better at it.

You can’t walk out of your own film!

A lot of bloody money means very little time for the wife. So in the next 36 scenes, Arzoo feeds Kunal’s dinner to the bin and then naps on the dinner table waiting for him to return. And when he does, he has obviously put his tainted money to ill use and their relationship drifts away.

Are you still reading this? Look up, even Kunal Khemu is pointing at the neighbouring screen where you could catch ‘Kahaani’ again instead.

Where was ‘Waka Waka’ shot again?

Well, if you’re not going to give up, here’s the rest: Kunal is finally exposed to the dark secrets of the diamond trade and how his bosses fuel terrorism, bomb blasts and anything that is wicked enough to imagine red horns jutting out of their heads. It’s hardly surprising that Kunal’s ethical side which had been snoozing through this film, suddenly surfaces and he tries to make amends. A few bottles of ketchup squirted on the supporting cast ensures a suitable climax.

No mercy for bad acting

Kunal Khemu and Amrita Puri are ideal in character roles, heroine’s sister or hero’s insipid sidekick. But in the lead, two strugglers can’t make a crippled film walk. While the story and screenplay do little to keep you seated throughout, the dialogues surely deserve a Ghanta nomination. Following a bitter argument, Arzoo’s friend consoles her, saying, “Jhagde toh hote hi hain hone ke liye.” Then there are pearls of wisdom like, “Har deal mein do party hoti hain, ek buyer aur ek seller.” Quite like the two parties in the hall playing ‘Blood Money’: the projectionist and the usher.

Daag Achche Hain

While the gore quotient was restricted to one scene where a drill pokes into flesh, it was disturbing enough to justify including the word ‘blood’ in the title. The Bhatts have always taken pride in making decidedly B-grade movies but the music in their films have had a longer shelf life than the films itself. Here, it just sounds like re-hashed versions of their previous soundtracks and doesn’t translate into any humming on the way back from the movie.

The distributors of this film want my blood and their money

While Kunal Khemu's previous movies have cured constipation, this one can possibly remedy piles. Now you know what the title refers to.
